IEEE ICBK 2017 Doctoral Symposium

Call for Papers

The Doctoral Symposium at the 8th IEEE International Conference on Big Knowledge (ICBK'17) brings together PhD students and academics working in Big Knowledge related areas. Students present their research projects and receive constructive feedback from a panel of internationally renowned researchers. The doctoral symposium is run in a highly interactive and collegial workshop-like format.

Who Should Participate

The Doctoral Symposium welcomes PhD students who have already settled on a dissertation topic in Big Knowledge related areas and whose PhD dissertation will benefit from external feedback. To get the most from the event, you will typically be in the first half of your PhD study. However, you may submit to the event if you are at any stage prior to submission of your dissertation provided there is enough time left to benefit from feedback.

Submission Instructions

To apply as a student participant to the Doctoral Symposium you need to submit a package consisting of two parts: a research abstract and a recommendation letter.

Part 1: Research Abstract

Your research abstract must be formatted according to the IEEE 2-column format and must not exceed 6 pages, including all text, references, appendices, and figures.

The research abstract should include:

·         The title of your research

·         Your contact information (name, affiliation, postal address, personal webpage, and e-mail address). Please note that all doctorial symposium submissions must have a PhD student as the first author. You can include your advisor as an co-author.

·         A one paragraph summary in the style of an abstract for a regular paper.

·         A motivation justifying the importance of the research problem.

·         Research questions and hypotheses clearly formulating what you want to achieve, solve or demonstrate.

·         Technical challenges associated with the research questions.

·       A discussion of the state of the art showing what existing work your research builds upon and which existing solutions have been developed, including an explanation why they do not solve the problem.

·      A description of the research methods you will use, including a strategy for evaluating your work to provide credible evidence of your results.

·        A plan for evaluating your work and presenting credible evidence of your results to the research community.

·         A section sketching your contributions including technical and other aspects.

·         A discussion on the originality of your contributions stating how your results go beyond existing approaches.

·         A description of the progress you have made towards completing the research.

·         A list of references of your accepted publications, if any.

Note: Your research abstract does not need to have this structure exactly, but the content should be similar. We recognize that if you are at a relatively early stage of your research you might have some difficulty addressing all of the above content requirements, but you should attempt to do so as well as you can. Your submission should contain no proprietary or confidential material and should cite no proprietary or confidential publications. Submissions that do not comply with the foregoing instructions will be desk rejected without review.

Part 2: Recommendation Letter

Ask your (primary) PhD advisor for a letter of recommendation. This letter should include:

·         Your name

·         An assessment of the current status of your dissertation research

·         The expected date for defending your dissertation

The letter should be in PDF format and should be sent directly by your advisor via e-mail to the IEEE ICBK '17 Doctoral Symposium Chairs, Zhi Jin (zhijin@pku.edu.cn) and Dimitris Karagiannis ( dk@dke.univie.ac.at). This letter will be held confidential. The e-mail should have the subject "ICBK17-DS-Recommendation" followed by your last name.

Evaluation Criteria

Your PhD research must be within the Big Knowledge related areas. The Doctoral Symposium Committee will select from the participants that satisfy this criterion using the following three criteria:

·         The potential of your research to make a significant contribution to Big Knowledge

·         The quality of the research abstract

·        The stage of your research and your potential to benefit from the Doctoral Symposium
